Kenneth Ong's circuitous journey into MCPS teaching, tutoring, and college counseling began well after graduating from Richard Montgomery High School. Earning degrees at the University of Virginia (B.S. in Finance/Marketing/Communications) and UCLA (MBA in Entrepreneurship and Entertainment Management), Kenneth has worked in Wall Street finance, venture capital, tech startups, architecture & design, media & entertainment--until now focusing on both social impact entrepreneurship and education.
Once considering a career in College Admissions, Kenneth served briefly with the admissions committees at both his alma maters, before working in film/TV creative development at the Walt Disney Company and other award-winning production companies; the screenplay development process shares many things in common with the college essay writing process! In addition to Gold Signature, Kenneth works concurrently as a college counseling adviser with the Silicon Valley firms Fahey Associates and KNavigators, as well as the NYC-based Prime Academics--on top of his own college counseling practice.
After returning to the DMV, Kenneth discovered a passion for teaching English and Social Studies as perhaps MCPS' most memorable, in-demand substitute teacher. He inspires students to discover the uniqueness, talents, and perspectives that they will need one day to write compelling essays to their favorite colleges. Thanks largely to his Hollywood entertainment industry background, an emphasis on storytelling underscores everything that Kenneth teaches and offers. In school, his high school and middle school students joke that he sounds like a TED Talk speaker; I guess that means they're listening!
