Gavin Hymes

English/SAT/ACT/Executive Functioning Coach

Gavin has taught every grade from kindergarten through the sophomore year of college, and in locations as diverse and distant as New England and Peru. He has an Ed. M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, as well as a B.A. in English Literature and a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. As an undergraduate, he earned the Augustus P. Silva Award for Excellence in Literature, and was a member of the Spanish National Honor Society (Sigma Delta Pi).

He began his career as a high school English teacher, and soon expanded his repertoire to ESL and Spanish classes. After three years of teaching at the renowned American School of Lima, he accepted a post as adjunct faculty at UMass Dartmouth, where he taught Spanish courses for five years. During the same period, he taught technical writing and freshman composition at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Over his 30-year career, he has taught in both public and private schools, and has continually adapted his strategies to meet the needs of all students, especially those with ADHD and executive functioning issues.

Always learning new things himself, Gavin has achieved fluency in Portuguese, and is also studying French and Italian. His lifelong interests in history and science have led to his teaching humanities courses and tutoring science, algebra, and geometry. He also has experience preparing students for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, SSAT, and HSPT.

For relaxation, Gavin hikes, gardens, reads, plays tennis, and paddles a kayak on the Patuxent river.
